***Big Weather Changes Today***

More rain, less snow now - Flood Watch now in effect

An active and highly changeable weather day is in store for Central New York today and tonight.

A strong cold front will cross the region late this morning into this afternoon. This system will bring a myriad of different weather conditions, including a period of heavy rainfall, a sharp drop in temperature and even some snowfall.

The potential exists for localized rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches today, especially along and east of the Interstate 81 corridor, including all of Chenango County. Sharp rises on area streams and creeks can be expected.

As temperatures drop to the upper 20s by late in the day, rain is expected to change over to a period of snow and sleet before precipitation tapers off from west to east by early evening. Snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are anticipated across most of Central New York, particularly over the higher terrain. Initially wet and untreated surfaces may become slippery leading to hazardous travel conditions especially early this evening.

***Changing Weather Ahead***

The short but heavy period of rain passing through this evening is the signal to much bigger changes ahead tomorrow.

A strong cold front will move through the area tomorrow. Ahead of it, very heavy rain is possible during the day on Tuesday. The rain will change to snow Tuesday afternoon with a rapid temperature drop. A few inches of snow is possible, mostly over the higher terrain. Roads could ice up very quickly Tuesday afternoon/evening. There is also the potential for gusty winds of 40 to 45 mph Tuesday afternoon/night which could cause sporadic power outages.

Enjoy the rest of today and tomorrow because big changes are on the way.

A very strong cold front will move through the region Tuesday, including a transition from rain to wet snow in the afternoon to evening. A quick coating to a few slushy inches of snow will be possible Tuesday afternoon to early evening, followed by temperatures falling well below freezing Tuesday night. This may lead to hazardous road conditions.

"SNOW FEAST OR FAMINE"... WHAT DID YOU GET? Very heavy yet very localized snow/sleet bands set up yesterday evening into last night before diminishing during the predawn hours this morning. See some of the snowfall reports at http://1.usa.gov/1lOdWal. A very interesting case, in which some areas "hit the snow lottery" while others just a few miles away got barely any. For example, here at NWS Binghamton, we got less than a half inch, yet just east of Port Crane (only about 10 miles away) got a WHOLE FOOT. Let us know what you got out of this zany end-of-March system! Report snow amount to nearest tenth of an inch, and location. Thanks! -Mark
